SHILLONG: All schools and colleges run by the Catholic Church in Khasi-Jaintia Hills will remain closed on February 26 in a symbolic protest against a news report appeared in a vernacular daily portraying Vatican head Pope Francis in poor light.
In a letter addressed to Director of Higher and Technical Education, the Shillong Arch Diocesan Educational Society, Arch Bishop House, Shillong, said one of the vernacular newspapers had maligned Pope Francis ‘who is our spiritual leader by falsely accusing him of all sorts of sexual misconduct’.
Concerned over the news report, the Catholic organisation has decided to mark February 26 as a day of prayer and silent protest, the Society added.
The signatories of the letter include Fr. John Madur, Vicar General and chairman of the Society and Fr. RM Majaw, secretary.
