SHILLONG: Taking a strong cognizance of the killing of a stray dog by a school teacher, renowned animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi said that the school teacher should be removed from his service for allegedly killing the poor creature.
“The school teacher should be brought to book. I am concerned about the security about students to have somebody as teacher who kills animals with ease,” Gandhi said while reacting to the killing of a dog over telephone here on Saturday.
She also asserted that “such an offender” must face punishment as per law under Section 428 of the Indian Penal Code.
While lauding the State Police for taking a prompt action into this incident, Maneka said that, the police have shown that their allegiance in apprehending the perpetrators.
“Research has shown that every killer has always started his/her journey by first being cruel to animals,” Maneka stated, while demanding that the erring policeman (Prakash Chettri) who was also arrested in the killing of the stray dogs should face stringent action.
“They are living beings and if we really care for them, we ought to ensure that their right to life is also protected,” she asserted.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered in this connection with the Laban Police Station under Section 428 IPC R/W11(1) PCA Act, 1960 against one Robert L Tlau and one Prakash Chettri, both residents of CID Complex, Bishnupur, Laban.
According to a FIR filed by Bijoy Marak, the dog was killed by using an iron pipe, which was repeatedly hit on its skull.
Responding to a distress call, police arrived on the scene and apprehended the alleged perpetrator and from his possession seized the slain animal in a gunny bag, even as his trousers were found to be stained with blood.
