SHILLONG: As the power situation in the state is expected to worsen further in the coming months, the state election department has decided to request Government to ensure uninterrupted power supply during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, Chief Electoral Officer P Naik said, “We would request the Government to ensure uninterrupted power supply right from the date of notification till the polling day.”

As the recently-concluded District Council election was held under the shadow of load shedding, Government had directed district administrations to have alternative source of lighting such as solar lanterns.

The State election department has initiated exercise for smooth conduct of upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

According to Naik, there would be no need to buy new Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) since the existing EVMs are enough to hold the elections.

On the recent incidents of a few poll personnel discharging duties in an inebriated condition, Naik issued a strong warning saying that the department would adopt zero tolerance towards such polling officers.

Reacting to a query about the steps to check the inclusion of D-Voters in the state electoral rolls, he said everyone talks about it but no one files an objection if a D-Voter’s name is included in the electoral roll.
