SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills police felicitated four brave hearts who assisted the police in nabbing criminals involved in murder and vehicle theft case.

It is a part of the initiative of the police to promote community policing among the common citizens of the State.

The four brave hearts Jagat Biswa and Dil Bahadur Budhatoki (two night chokidars at Iewduh), Oswin R Marak and Kenneth M Pala were felicitated by East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang at a function held at Police Officer Mess, Police Reserve, on Friday.

While recalling the courageous acts of both Biswa and Budhatoki, East Khasi Hills police superintendent M Kharkrang said that earlier on February 19 at around 1:30 am, the two unsung heroes who are over 60 years of age had shown the courage to take on five hardened criminals who were allegedly involved in a murder.

While patrolling near the beef market, Biswa saw five people carrying something in a gunny bag. “He (Biswa) then asked the five people to stop. But instead the five people fled away towards the Mawlonghat side and left the gunny bag. After this, Biswa called his other colleague (Budhatoki) and then chased the five criminals,” Kharkrang recalled.

The police patrolling party who was on duty at Mawlonghat caught the three persons and inquired as to why they were running.

“Initially, they tried to mislead the police by saying that they were being chased by some miscreants inside lewduh. During the process of enquiry, the two night chowkidars arrived at the place and informed that the persons who were running had dropped some bag which was looking suspicious,” Kharkrang said.

He said that the two chokidars led the police to the spot where the gunny bag was dropped and on checking it, they found a body inside. The body belonged to Uttam Marak who was murdered at Kimling Restaurant, Motphran. The police later arrested nine persons involved in the murder.

Applauding the courage of another two bravehearts, Kharkrang said that the duos (Pala and Marak) caught car tape lifters, Prakash Nonglyer and Biresh Nonglyer while they were trying to steal a car tape from the vehicle which was parked near the cathedral.

The East Khasi Hills SP urged upon the general public to work together with the police in the detection and solving of crimes.

He also requested the general public that they should not have the mindset that they would be harassed if they help the police.
