Chinese man stealing coins from wishing fountain busted
Beijing: An enterprising thief in China who used a giant magnet fastened at the end of a rope to steal coins from a wishing fountain was caught by monks who turned him over to the cops.
The thief, surnamed Zhang, 32, used the magnet to fish out hundreds of coins from the fountain earlier this week at the Dinglin Temple in Jiangning district in Jiangsu province of China.
But Zhang’s attempt was foiled when monks patrolling the temple spotted him stealing coins. Zhang attempted to flee, but was caught by monks who turned him over to police.
Zhang initially denied stealing the coins but confessed after police pointed out his bag was wet and contained the same type of leaves floating in the fountain, ‘Global Times’ reported. Police counted USD 53 in coins in the sack belonging to Zhang, who is now being held on theft charges. (PTI)
Bail set for mom accused of driving into surf
Orlando (US): A Florida judge set a bond of USD 1.2 million for a pregnant woman accused of driving her minivan into the ocean in an attempt to kill her three children. Volusia County Court spokeswoman Ludmilla Lelis says that 32-year-old Ebony Wilkerson’s bond was set for three charges of attempted murder and three charges of child abuse causing great bodily harm.
Wilkerson was represented by the public defender’s office and did not enter a formal plea. But Judge Shirley Green found probable cause for the case to proceed. An arraignment date was not released. Wilkerson told police she was not trying to hurt her children, but she was driving too close to the water. Her children told investigators another story, saying their mother was trying to kill them. Myanmar to be named world’s best tourist destination
Yangon: Myanmar will be presented the award of World’s Best Tourist Destination for 2014 by the European Union Council on Tourism and Trade soon, media reported Sunday.
The award is aimed at boosting Myanmar’s tourism industry and promoting tourist attractions in the country which is famed for its unique cultural heritage not only in Asia but also in the world, Xinhua reported citing New Light.
The award is presented based on ethics for tourism industry, safety of tourists and preservation of cultural heritages designated by the UN Tourism Division, Unesco and the European Union Council on Tourism and Trade.
The World’s Best Tourist Destination Award, introduced in 2007, is one of the highest accolades in the travel and tourism industry in the world.
Additionally, in the wake of dramatic increase in tourist arrivals, Myanmar plans to introduce travel insurance services. However, the number of applicants is still low. To enhance development of its tourism industry, Myanmar opened four entry and exit points on the Myanmar-Thai border in August last year.
Meanwhile, visa-on-arrival facility for visitors from 48 countries and regions has also been offered to facilitate their travel to the country.
In 2013, Myanmar attracted over two million tourists, of whom 1.14 million entered through border gates and 885,476 through airports. (ANI)
Beer till my last breath: Snake bite victim
Sydney: An Australian man lived it up with a chilled beer as his last indulgence after being bitten by a venomous snake last month, media reported on Saturday.
After the snake bit him, 54-year-old Rod Sommerville opened his fridge, grabbed a beer and called an ambulance as he thought he was anyway going to succumb to the deadly bite, the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin reported.
He preferred not to alarm his son who slept next to him.
“If you panic it makes it worse,” he said.
Sommerville got bitten by a two-and-half-foot snake while gardening in the backyard of his home at Yeppoon, a coastal town in the Australian state of Queensland.
“I said to myself, if I’m going to cark it (Australian for dying) I’m going to have a beer, so I got a Goldie out of the fridge and drank that; ’cause you know Eastern Browns are the second most venomous snake in the world,” Sommerville said.
He was taken straight to the Yeppoon Hospital but transferred a short while later to Rockhampton to get the anti-venom. (ANI)
