Air Chief at Sainik School, Purulia
Shillong: Chief of the Air Staff Arup Raha on Friday visited the Sainik School, Purulia, in West Bengal where he had studied from 1965 to 1990. He addressed the cadets and took the salute in a guard of honour presented by the cadets. Air Chief Marshal Raha who was on a four-day visit to West Bengal also went to the Air Force Station Kalaikunda where he discussed the operational commitments of the station. He had a discussion with Army authorities at the Eastern Command headquarters in Kolkata on Saturday, according to a Defence Ministry release. (By Our Reporter)
Notification for 4 LS seats of Jharkhand issued
Ranchi: Process for the Lok Sabha elections for the four parliamentary seats of Jharkhand began on Saturday following the notification issued by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state parliamentary election here. Jharkhand CEO P K Jajoria said that with the issuance of notification, nomination papers could be filed by the candidates. Last date of filing nomination papers is March 22. Polling in the four Lok Sabha seats-Lohardaga, Palamu, Chatra and Koderma- will take place on April 10 from 0700hrs to 1600hrs. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on the March 24 and candidates can withdraw their names till the 26th March. Counting of votes will take place on May 16. (UNI)
Curfew in Kashmir district
Srinagar: Curfew has been imposed in Kashmir’s Bandipora district, where tensions escalated on Saturday amid the death of a youth in police firing a day before. Farhat Ahmad Dar was killed in Naidkhai area of Bandipora in north Kashmir when a violent mob attacked a security force camp in the area. When a police vehicle was chasing away the mob, irate protestors tried to torch the vehicle. Policemen inside the vehicle reportedly fired at the mob, critically injuring the youth. Police said the youth was immediately shifted for treatment to Pattan town in Baramulla district, but he succumbed to injuries en route. District Magistrate Bandipora ordered a probe and police have also registered an FIR into the incident. (IANS)
Rapist sentenced to life
Jammu: A fast track court in Jammu sentenced a rape convict for life Saturday. The convict, Nikhil Kumar Sharma, was tried by the court for raping a 10-year-old mentally challenged girl in Akhnoor area of Jammu district. The crime was committed in 2008 but the trail was handed over to the fast track court last year. District and Sessions Judge Sanjeev Kumar delivered the verdict. (IANS)
5 of a family injured in acid attack
Bhadohi: Five members of a family were injured in an alleged acid attack following a dispute over minor issue in Sikandara village here, police said on Saturday. Nankahu Rajbhar, his wife Shanti and three others had on Friday gone to the house of one Hariram Rajbhar in pursuance of their dispute over one’s cattle entering into the agricultural field of another, Chauri police station incharge Nihal Ahmed said. As the tempers ran high, Hariram and his wife Pramila threw acid on the five and fled, he said adding that all the five were rushed to community health centre from where they were referred to district hospital. The condition of Nankahu and his wife was stated to be serious, police said. Both the accused have been arrested and police is further investigating the issue, they said. (PTI)
Helpline launched to monitor illegal cash flow in Delhi
New Delhi: A helpline to register complaints against the illegal movement of cash here ahead the Lok Sabha polls was launched Saturday, an official said. The Income Tax department said toll free number 1800 110 132 will be monitored round the clock by the senior officials. Lok sabha polls will be held in Delhi April 10. The department has also been directed to closely scrutinise distribution of money to people and to bring to notice if people are found to be carrying more than Rs.10 lakh, the official added. (IANS)
Three detained for threatening to blow up Bodh Gaya temples
Patna: At least three people, including a girl, have been detained here for threatening to blow up the Bodh Gaya and Vishnupad temples in Gaya district, police said on Saturday. Police detained Sunny, Rakesh and a 19-year-old girl from Ranipur-Rasulpur locality in Patna late Friday, Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj said. “Three of them were detained for interrogation after police traced the mobile number used to sent the threatening SMS to the Gaya district officials to blow up both the temples,” he said. But the police officers were surprised when the girl revealed an interesting story behind the SMS. She said she was using a mobile phone which was gifted to her by a boy. (IANS)
