Lack of ULBs prevent extension of JNNURM schemes: Ampareen

SHILLONG: Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has said that the department has not been able to implement various schemes under the JNNURM outside the municipal areas due to the non-presence of any urban local bodies (ULBs).
“We cannot sanction schemes under the JNNURM in other localities in Shillong outside the municipal areas since there are no ULBs,” Lyngdoh said while replying during Question Hour in the Assembly on Tuesday.
While replying to a supplementary question of Nongthymmai legislator Jemino Mawthoh, she admitted that there are two schemes under JNNURM which are being implemented in Nongmynsong and Pynthorumkhrah.
“The housing project at Nongmynsong is under the Integrated Housing & Slum Development Programme,” Urban Affairs Minister said.
She also informed that they have also taken up projects for improvement of sewerage and drainage system within the municipal areas.”We are also preparing a master sewerage plan which would be funded by the Asian Development Bank,” Lyngdoh said. She also informed that the New Shillong Township Development Agency has been set up under the provisions of the Meghalaya Societies Registration Act, 1983. “The agency was created to promote and secure proper planning and development of all the towns in the State through enforcement and implementation of the Master Plan.”
