SHILLONG: The intervention of Meghalaya State Electricity Regulatory Commission was sought for compensation for a boy, who lost both his limbs due to electrocution.

The five-year-old Chidam B Marak was electrocuted at Chasingre in West Garo Hills as the transformer located at the village was not fenced. Moreover, no gate was erected.

After the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi wrote to the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited MePDCL) seeking action against the guilty, CSWO President Agnes Kharshiing on Friday urged the Meghalaya State Electricity Regulatory Commission to direct MePDCL to provide compensation to the victim due to its criminal negligence as the transformer was kept in an unsecured place.

After the incident, a magisterial inquiry was ordered and the report of the magistrate TK Sangma found that the area where the transformer was kept was not fenced and there was no gate.

After the probe report was submitted, the Deputy Commissioner in a letter addressed to (MePDCL) on March 7 this year sought necessary action.

The Deputy Commissioner also said that incorrect information was communicated about the incident in a review meeting held in January this year though there was criminal negligence on the part of the lines man.
