Relief operations underway in WKH cyclone-hit areas

NONGSTOIN: The Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills, S Kharlyngdoh, while quoting fresh and final reports, informed that altogether 229 houses were completely destroyed by the storm, out of which 55 households lost everything. 16 villages were affected, most of them severely.

According to latest reports the sixteen villages affected by the cyclone were–Khliehmawlieh, Domwahlang- Mawsiang, Domwahlang- Myriaw Nongrangoi- Dongsohlah, Nongrangoi , Lumpyngngad , Nongpyndeng , Nongstoin, Nongdiwah Mawkynbat, Mawsngapwir , Mawkynrum Khyllem, Lawrapha, Risiang-Japung , and Ladnongsba.

Meanwhile, West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, S Kharlyngdoh on Sunday said that he along with Chief Secretary PBO Warjri, IAS and his team visited the affected villages and handed over Rs 1 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

Kharlyngdoh also informed that 49 persons were admitted to Nongstoin Civil Hospital while 7 who are in critical condition were admitted to Shillong for better treatment.

Kharlyngdoh inform that out of 49 injured persons, four seriously injured identified as Pynibor Nongsiej (10) and Edmund Nongsiej (22) (Uncle and Niece) of Domwahlang and Phibanroi Marngar Marngar (22) and her daughter 5 month old from Lumpyngngad were declared dead by the doctors on duty in Nongstoin Civil Hospital.

Kharlyngdoh also added that efforts were on to provide relief items to the affected families at the earliest. He also informed that on Thursday night, 45 quintal of rice, dal, salt, onion, blankets, Bed sheets, solar light and tarpaulin has provided as a relief to the affected victims.

On Friday, the Deputy Commissioner gave an advance amount of Rs 4000 as relief for each seriously injured ) person and full payment of Rs 3100 to each person not too seriously injured but under treatment in hospital.

The Deputy Commissioner also sent relief materials including CGI sheets to the villages of Ladnongsba, Lumpyngngad and Risiang. The State Government has announced a sum of only Rs 50 lakh as relief.
