FKJGP concerned over Simsang river pollution

SHILLONG: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People, East Garo Hills unit, Williamnagar, has inspected the drained out waste materials on Thursday by the company (BSC&C&C),which is constructing the National Highway, Shillong to Tura road while camping at Samanda.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, Mathew Marak, General Secretary of FKJGP East Garo Hills, Williamnagar said that the waste materials are directly flowing to Simsang river, resulting in the pollution of river.

“In this connection, the Federation informed the Manager of the company many times but no action was taken”, Marak said.

According to Marak, the waste materials may pose a significant threat to the aquatic lives of Simsang River. Moreover, the people of Williamnagar are using the river for many purposes, especially for drinking.

If proper action is not taken, dumping of wastes will result in spread of many diseases as the waste material may contain chemicals, he informed.

The Federation also urged the department concerned to look into the matter seriously and dump the waste materials in a scientific way which will save many lives.
