Guwahati: After nearly a month in judicial custody in cases ranging for abetting self-immolation to rioting, rights activist Akhil Gogoi on Monday walked out of jail after procuring bail in the last of the cases against him.

Gogoi, who was flown on Sunday to Jorhat after arresting him from Guwahati jail in connection with a case registered in Titabor police station of Jorhat district, was granted bail in the case by a local court on Monday.

Among various conditions set in the bail, he had to deposit Rs 10,000 as a surety amount.

After completing the formalities, Gogoi walked out of the Jorhat central jail this evening, flanked by his lawyers to cheering supporters waiting for him.

Gogoi was arrested on March 2 on charges of abetting a self-immolation by a land activist in Guwahati last month.

Guwahati police showed him arrested in 11 cases in synchronized succession, till he was granted bail by the Gauhati high Court in all the cases on Friday last.

However, a team from Jorhat police reached the same day and took his custody in connection with a case registered in Titabor police station.

Gogoi, talking to reporters after emerging from Jorhat jail, alleged that his arrest was a conspiracy by the government as the ruling Congress wanted to keep him behind bars till the elections are over since he had been creating public awareness against the government’s apathy. (UNI)
