Guwahati: Protests continued in western Assam’s Chirang district for the third day on Monday against the alleged rape and murder of a teenager even as curfew in the most-volatile areas of Bijni was relaxed.
Indefinite curfew, which was clamped in Bijni area of the district on the evening of March 29 following the crime, was relaxed from 0600 hours to 1900 hours on Monday, official sources said.
Curfew was also relaxed for few hours on Sunday and as law and order prevailed during the period, it was further relaxed on Monday.
Meanwhile, several organizations continued staging protests against the rape and murder and demanding exemplary punishment to the accused.
Fourteen people were picked up by police yesterday in connection with the case, out of whom five were identified by another girl, who had escaped from the clutches of the criminals.
A teenager was allegedly raped and murdered in a remote village in Chirang district in western Assam, along Bhutan border, on March 29 morning.
Seven women of Boldi Gaon had gone for fishing in a rivulet near their village under the district’s Amguri police station when a group of miscreants reportedly attacked them.
Three women managed to escape and report the villagers.
By the time the villagers reached the place, one of the girls was allegedly raped and murdered. Three others were also allegedly molested. (UNI)
