Repair of NH 44
JOWAI: In a meeting held in the office chamber of the East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, traditional heads of more than 10 villages under Narpuh Elaka set a 10-day deadline for the State government to repair the National Highway in East Jaintia Hills from Ladrymbai till Malidor (NH-44).
A delegation led by the Dolloi, Narpuh Elaka, Manbha Kyndoh, Narpuh MDC, Desous Pohshna and Umkiang Rangbah Shnong, Silent Sutnga handed over their presentation to the District head and expressed their deep concern over the adamant attitude of the State government particularly the Public Works Department who failed to fulfill their demand for immediate repair of the National Highway.
“Whenever we met the authority we only got an assurance. This time we shall take extreme steps if our demand is not fulfilled immediately”, the Dolloi, Manbha Kyndoh said.
The Dolloi informed that the terrible condition of the road caused much grievance to the commuters who frequent the road. “Every day, vehicles break down in the middle of the road resulting in heavy traffic jam for several hours”, Lumphyllut Rangbah Shnong, Lowis Lamin said, adding, “If we go from Umkiang to Shillong, it normally takes us 3 to 4 hours but the in the current situation, the trip gets delayed by over 12 hours”.
“The PWD has completely neglected the NH-44 in our area and this proves the irresponsibility and incompetence of the PWD officials”, local MDC, Desous Pohshna said during the meeting with the DC. He also informed the DC that the people of the Elaka could not wait any longer.
The DC assured that he would surely take up the matter with the Government, particularly with the Public Works Department to ensure an early completion of the work.
