SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Electricity Regulatory Commission (MSERC) is likely to come up with a fresh power tariff within the next few days.

The fresh power tariff for the current fiscal year (2014-2015) to be announced by the MSERC will be applicable from April 1.

“We have not been able to pass an order in this regard due to the election model of code of conduct,” MSERC chairman Anand Kumar said here on Thursday. He, however, assured that the commission had taken a special care to save the interest of the domestic consumers.

“We have brought a minimal hike as far as domestic users are concerned. Even though the present hike would slightly higher compared to the hikes that were effected in the past,” Kumar said.

To lower the hike in the power tariff of the domestic users, MSERC chairman informed that they have tried to strike a balance by increasing the power tariff for industries and commercial purposes.

According to him, the MeECL had submitted a proposal to increase the power tariff by more than five times.

He informed that the MeECL had proposed to increase the power tariff from the existing Rs 35 per unit to Rs 200 per month.

MSERC chairman said that in the last fiscal year, the MeECL had proposed an increase of 30 percent in the power tariff.

“We had not accepted this proposal and we recommend increasing the power tariff by only 7.5 percent,” Kumar said.
