TURA: The Unified Peace Movement for Garo Hills (UPMGH) has expressed happiness over the peaceful polls that took place in the entire Garo Hills region for the Lok Sabha elections.
“Despite many polling stations declared hyper sensitive the militants made it public that they would not interfere and they kept their word. UPMGH is grateful to them,” informed the movement’s general secretary Rev. Fr. Januarius Sangma in a press communiqué.
The UPMGH has appealed to the state government to request the central government to expedite the names of three peace facilitators at the earliest and allow the state government to initiate peace talks as it believes the time is right for such a movement to ensure lasting peace to the militancy problem plaguing the Garo Hills.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Government had some time back forwarded the names of three individuals to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, to act as facilitators for the peace talks with the militants.
