24-hour bandh in EJH passes off peacefully

JOWAI: The 24-hour bandh called by five NGOs comprising of the SRS-EJH, AJYWO-CB, KSU-JHDU, HNYF-EJZ, FKJGP-KC on Wednesday passed off peacefully in the entire East Jaintia Hills District.
The bandh was called in protest against the adamant attitude of the State government particularly, the Public Works Department to repair the National Highway NHY-44 which is in a deplorable condition.
The entire national highway NH-44 in East Jaintia Hills wore a deserted look which also affected the vehicular movement even in West Jaintia Hills as coal laden trucks and others vehicles stayed off the road.
“There is no untoward incident reported so far”, a senior police official from Khliehriat informed adding that the bandh badly affected business establishments, banking institutions, educational institutions and government offices.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, AJYWO Chief, MH Dkhar informed that they will decide their further course of action in the next joint meeting of all five NGOs.
