SHILLONG: Following the rape of a pregnant woman at Anjalee Hall in Shillong, migrants working in various construction sites without any registration have come under the scanner.
On Monday morning, at about 10.45, the 19-year-old pregnant woman was raped by a co-worker identified as Prema while being engaged in renovation work at Anjalee Hall. The victim was later admitted at the Civil Hospital.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang said that the accused, who is from Assam, did not furnish proper address to the contractor and the employer. The SP said though the employer was questioned, the police did not get much details.
The police official admitted that without proper registration of the migrant workers, it would be difficult for the police to track them if they committed any crime.
The police had in the past asked employers and contractors to maintain a register which contained the names and proper addresses of their workers. Despite tall claims, the labour department was yet to come up with a data base on migrant workers. In the absence of such a mechanism, the migrants could advantage of the situation and resort to various crimes.
