SHILLONG: In its bid to promote optimal and effective development and utilization of basin resources within a framework of sustainable development, the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) invited a Dehradun-based firm to spread awareness on waste management and keeping the rivers and lakes clean.
The firm, Clover Organic Pvt. Ltd., addressed a one-day workshop on the issue at the Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides, Laban on Thursday.
The event titled “Workshop on organic solutions: Agriculture, aquaculture, wastewater treatment and solid waste management” was attended by officials from several line departments, NGO members and others.
CEO and Founder of Clover Organic Pvt.Ltd., S Agarwal, pointed out that “Meghalaya has the potential of a titanium mine” in relation to the resources it possesses but the need of the hour is “to avoid polluting the environment in any way”.
He spoke on the unconventional use of microbes to help clean the river systems and lakes in Meghalaya as technology was not always feasible with regards to finances.
Two technical sessions followed the inauguration session. The first was on waste water treatment while the second dealt with landless or small holding entrepreneurs with special focus on how to maximize land productivity.
