SHILLONG: Shillong city is once again witnessing several cases of thefts at night and the ongoing load shedding seems to be only aiding the thieves.

Over the last couple of days, several cases of thefts have been reported from different pockets of the city and miscreants usually come out of their pit during the power shut down at night.

On April 19 around 3 am, residents of Kharmalki Malki, Shillong apprehended one Moses Khongjee (37) while he was attempting to commit theft in the locality but police managed to arrested the accused.

Similarly, on the intervening night of April 17 and 18, 2014 unknown burglers stole one digital camera, one cell-phone, memory cards and SIM cards from the shop of Sunny Pathaw at Jhalupara, Shillong.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang while talking on the issue said that police personnel have been deployed in the area but the ongoing power shutdown creates problems for the police personnel to keep an eye on any activities. “I think we will have to put up more men at night,” Kharkrang said.

According to SP, these thieves are not a selected group of people are basically they are burglars.

It may be mentioned that On April 18 around 9:45 pm, unknown miscreants broke into the GAD Quarter of A.S. Mukhim, MCS at Motinagar, Shillong and stole one laptop. Besides this, on April 17 in between 1.30 am to 2 am, one unknown miscreant trespassed into the house at Malki, Shillong and molested a fifteen-year-old girl and stole cash amounting to Rs. 1,920.

In the previous years as well, many cases of thefts were reported from different parts of the city during such periods load shedding.

When contacted, SP (City) Vivek Syiem also said that measures have been taken by the police to curtail such activities.
