SHILLONG: The two-day District Level Athletic Meet, organised by the District Sports Office, Ampati, came to a close with a prize distribution ceremony at Ampati Mini Stadium last week.
Twenty-eight schools from across South West Garo Hills took part.
Various track and field events were held under three categories – U-14, U-17 and U-19.
Attending the Athletic Meet as the chief guest on the closing day, Superintendent of Police, South West Garo Hills, R Muthu, told the participating athletes that during such sporting events, one gets to learn about themselves, their strength and weaknesses and at the same time he stressed on the importance of discipline and the spirit of sportsmanship in the field of sports and games, which, he said, would help them in their future lives.
He later declared the Athletic Meet closed in the presence of all the athletes, sports officials, other district officials and school teachers.
On Wednesday morning, the Athletic Meet was opened in the presence of the District School Education Officer, Ampati, SN Sangma, who also urged the athletes of various schools to put in their best efforts so that they can go from district level to state level or even national level.
District Sports Officer in-charge Ampati, JP Marak informed the gathering that those athletes who do their best in the district level will be selected for the State level athletics meet to be held at Shillong from May 19 and this year for the first time they would get the chance to participate on the synthetic track being laid at the JN Stadium, Polo.
