SHILLONG: Meghalaya’s first inter-state bus terminus (ISBT) at Mawlai Mawiong is set to become a reality with necessary sanctions for the project already being made. Transport Minister HDR Lyngdoh on Wednesday said that the sanction for the project has been received and the department is in the process of floating tender for the project.
The construction of the proposed ISBT at Mawiong was approved by the Planning Commission in 2012. Once operational, the bus terminal being constructed at a cost of Rs. 48.31 crore, would accommodate as many as 200 buses.
Earlier, the transfer of the site for the construction of the ISBT had hit hurdles owing to a dispute between the Thawmuid and Thangkhiew clans in relation to the possession of 60 acres of land. The dispute was resolved in court after three months and ownership of the land was restored to the Thawmuid clan.
According to Lyngdoh, all issues plaguing the project have been resolved. The Transport Minister would also conduct an inspection of the site shortly to ensure that the construction work commences soon.
It is noteworthy that the Government also has plans to construct an Inter State Truck Terminus (ISTT) at Sumer at a total cost of Rs. 26 crore.
