Veteran journalist Pranab Sinha dead

Guwahati: Veteran journalist and PTI Tezpur correspondent Pranab Sinha died on Thursday after prolonged illness, family sources said. He was 73 and is survived by his wife. Sinha, who served PTI for more than 35 years as a stringer, was suffering from diabetes and kidney ailments. He passed away this morning at his residence in Tezpur. Besides PTI, Sinha also contributed to UNI, The Assam Tribune, The Sentinel, The Telegraph and the Dooordarshn. He also edited an Assamese magazine ‘Mahajati’, started by his father, former MP late Purno Narayan Sinha. He was the founder President of Sonitpur Journalists’ Union and remained in the same post till his death. All Assam Media Employees Federation (AAMEF) and Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) condoled Sinha’s death and prayed for peace of the departed soul. (PTI)

Naga villager shot dead by Assam cops

Kohima: A Naga villager was allegedly shot dead by Assam police near Indisen village of Dimapur district bordering Assam. The 38-year-old deceased identified as Supongtemjen Longkumer was killed in forest area of the village on Wednesday, Additional SP of Dimapur district said today. The body, recovered from a jungle area by a search party, bore bullet wounds and several other injury marks, he added. Locals alleged some Assam police personnel from Sankartilla police outpost opened fire on four Nagas clearing the jungle at around 8:30 AM killing Supongtemjen. (PTI)

Three KPLT militants apprehended

Diphu (Assam): Three Karbi Peoples Liberation Tigers (KPLT) militants were apprehended by the police in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, police said on Thursday. The police launched an operation in Borpothar under Bokajan sub-division of the district last night and apprehended the trio. The trio have been identified as Daniel Ingti Kathar, Benting Teron and Bimal Engti. The police recovered an extortion note and four mobiles from their possession, sources added. (PTI)

Manipur HC defers hearing on killing of three youths

Imphal: The Manipur High Court which was to begin hearing into the killing of three young men allegedly by personnel of 3 corp in 2010 when the present vice-chief of the Army Staff Lt General Dalbir Dingh Suhah was its GOC, has deferred the hearing till May five. A writ petition was filed by Phijam Manikumar which stated that his brother Phijzm Naobi, besides R K Roshan and Thounaojam Prem were allegedly abducted by personnel of the 3 Corp from Char Mile area at Dimapur in Nagaland and killed after torture on March 2010. The high court was to begin the hearing of the case yesterday but it was deferred to May five because of the death of a legal practitioner, court sources said. Meanwhile, hundreds of women on Thursday protested the killing of the three young men, at Thangmeiband in Imphal West district. The protesters demanded justice as the three youths, they held were innocent and were killed in the name of dealing with insurgents under the ‘controversial’ Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958. Information Commission imposes penalty of Rs 25,000 on senior official

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Information Commission imposed a penalty of Rs 25,000 on an Executive Engineer for repeatedly defying the Commission’s order to provide information as sought by an appellant. Information Commissioner Abraham K Techi imposed penalty of Rs 25,000 on Executive Engineer of Mechuka PWD for repeatedly defying the Commission’s order to provide information as sought by an appellant. Appellant T Vijay Samior sought information regarding construction of road and bridges under Mechuka PWD but the the engineer, who is the public information officer, had neither provided the information nor reported it to the Commission despite being served several notices, official sources said here today. The engineer has been asked to pay the penalty before May 16 next. Failure to comply with the order may compel the Commission to initiate action against him, sources added. (PTI)

2 women die in accident in Nagaland

Kohima: Two women were killed in a car accident in Wokha district, when the vehicle, in which they were travelling, fell into a deep gorge in the wee hours of on Wednesday. According to a press release issued by SDPO Wokha, the incident occurred around 2:30 to 3:00 am between Yikhum Village and Helipad. The vehicle was coming from Merapani in Assam to Wokha town, fell 250 feet below the road, the release said. The deceased has been identified as Thungbeni Patton (26) of Changsu Old village and Abeni Ngullie (28) of Nungying village.(UNI)
