SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Government on Monday failed to clear the initial amount of Rs. 30 crore due to NEEPCO for restoration of power supply to the State by the public sector power utility, but hoped to do so by Tuesday.

An official of the State Government said on Monday that ways and means to clear the down payment of Rs. 30 crore to NEEPCO was being worked out and hopefully the Government would pay the amount by Tuesday.

NEEPCO has made it clear that power supply to Meghalaya would be deregulated immediately after the State Government pays. Rs 30 crore out of Rs. 379 crore which is the total due of Meghalaya to NEEPCO, including principal and interest, for power purchases.

Because of the restrictions imposed by NEEPCO on supplies to Meghalaya, the State is reeling under an unprecedented power crisis.
