ICC confirms review of anti-corruption unit

Dubai: The ICC confirmed the review of its under-fire anti-corruption unit even as it dismissed reports raising questions on the watchdog’s effectiveness in dealing with the menace of spot and match-fixing. In the wake of reports claiming Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) will now be controlled by the sport’s big three – India, England and Australia – the ICC confirmed the development on Friday without undermining the role that ACSU has performed since its inception in 2000. “The International Cricket Council today confirmed that a review of the sport’s collective approach in protecting against the threat of corruption, at both an international and domestic level, is to take place,” said the ICC in a statement. Aguero fit for Man City’s title decider

LONDON: Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will be fit for Sunday’s Premier League title decider against West Ham United, manager Manuel Pellegrini said on Friday. Argentine Aguero missed the 4-0 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday that put City two points clear of Liverpool at the top of the table with one match remaining. “The whole squad is fit for the game,” Pellegrini told a news conference. FA to limit foreigners in Premier League

London: The English Football Association said, on Thursday, that it wants to limit the number of non-European Union players in Premier League teams in a bid to bolster home grown talent. Football Association chairman Greg Dyke also announced an overhaul of the work permit system and the creation of a new division for Premier League ‘B teams’ in a bid to improve the health of the English game. The work permit proposals include a blanket ban on non-European Union players for clubs outside the top flight, bringing England in line with other European countries. There are currently 66 English players eligible to represent England playing regularly in the 20 Premier League teams and Dyke has set a target of increasing that number to 90 by 2022. A BBC study published in October found that English footballers accounted for just 32% of the minutes played in the Premier League, compared to 59% for home-grown players in Spain and 50% for home-grown players in Germany’s top league. The report was produced by a commission set up by Dyke in October to investigate why the number of English players in the Premier League is falling.

HC upholds Govt’s Sports Code

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday rejected the Indian Olympic Association’s plea challenging the Centre’s power to legislate sports in the country through the guidelines of National Sports Code aimed at bringing transparency in the functioning of the sports bodies along with fixed tenure and age-limit for office-bearers. A bench approved the National Sports Development Code, which barred more than 12 and eight years of tenure for President and other office-bearers, including Secretary and Treasurer, for any sports federation with maximum age of 70 years to officiate. The code also envisages to bring under Right to Information Act all National Sports Federations (NSFs) availing government grants and implementation of NADA anti-doping rules coupled with guidelines for holding fair and transparent elections to NSFs.
