World Bank official team visits Peren in Nagaland

Kohima: World Bank official along with North East Rural Livelihood Project (NERLP) team project managers and other officials from Regional project Management Unit (RPMU) Guwahati visited Peren district recently to review the project for the mid-term review.

NERLP funded by World Bank under ministry of DoNER, Government of India has been operating in two district of Nagaland namely Peren and Tuensang districts.

According to official sources on Monday that the visit of the World Bank official was with an objective ‘to improve rural livelihoods especially that of women, unemployed youth and the most disadvantaged’ in four participating states of North East India.

The World Bank Official, Senior Rural Development Specialist Rural Development and Livelihoods, Vinayak Narayan Ghatate stressed on how to improve the rural livelihood activities through building collective sustainable community institution like Self Help Group, Community Development Group and Producer Organization, which would enable to upscale their production and attain better economic and social improvement and also to better bargaining power for their rights.

He emphasized that the project deals with every sector from both farm, non -farm and skill development and building their capacity for management of their natural resources.

He visited SHG members livelihood activities like backyard piggery, weaving, grocery shops etc. and also inspected the entry point activity carried out and how it had help them.

District project manager Ruuvilie Kotsu briefed the visiting team about the progress of the project in the district from inception on March 31, completed project village awareness, entry point activity (EPA) in all the 79 villages, Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) in 65 Villages.

He said the number of SHG formed and registered under the project is 599 SHGs wherein 325 SHG after imparting training and grading had received seed money of Rs.20, 000. Kotsu said that the SHG are inter-loaning among its members.

The visiting team comprised of Senior Rural Development Specialist Rural Development and Livelihoods Vinayak Narayan Ghatate World Bank and Project Team Project Manager Micro-finance Mrinalinee Khonikar, State Coordinator Ringsangbo Zeliang, District Project Manager Ruuvilie Kotsu, Assistant Project Manager Skill Development and Placement Dipankar Baruah and Assistant Project manager NRM&E Jitendro Singh.
