SHILLONG: The ANVC-B has condemned the alleged illegal detention, implication, torture and custodial death of Balsan Marak by Tura Police.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, ANVC-B alleged that Marak was illegally detained and tortured in Tura Police Station which led to his untimely death at Tura Civil Hospital.

“The boy who was only 18 years old was implicated in the 12 victims’ case along with four others who are mostly relatives of the activists. The concerned citizens, who went out to help the victims were trapped and implicated by Tura Police,” the ANVC-B claimed.

According to the outfit, there was a counter FIR which was not acted upon by Tura Police, “and a question arises as to why the case of the 12 victims is being handled in a one-sided manner”.

“Is police trying to hide a bigger racket? The actual ANVC cadres who are involved in thrashing the victims have been instructed by top officials in Police to stay away for some time,” the ANVC-B alleged.

“The Government is turning Garo Hills into a killing field. NGOs, Church leaders and civil society should demand a judicial inquiry and suspend all officers involved in the killing,” the outfit added.
