Will do all to protect Indian missions, Karzai tells Modi

NEW DELHI: Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Friday spoke to Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi and assured him that Kabul “will do all to protect Indian missions there”.
The external affairs ministry said Modi thanked Karzai for the “efforts of Afghan forces in thwarting (the) attack on India’s consulate in Herat”.
“President Karzai & I talked about Consulate attack in Herat. He assured me he will do everything to protect India’s Missions in Afghanistan,” Modi tweeted later. He also praised the consulate staff in Herat and thanked the security forces for thwarting the terror attack.
Modi will be sworn in as prime minister on Monday, May 26. Karzai is among the SAARC leaders expected to attend the event.
Meanwhile, BJP President Rajnath Singh on Friday condemned the attack on the Indian Consulate in Afghanistan and lauded the role of brave ITBP jawans and officers for putting up a brave defence.
“Happy to know that all staff members and others working at the consulate are safe. Once again kudos to our security forces,” he said.
Lauding the role of Indian security forces for their brave action, he said, “Hats off to our brave ITBP jawans and officers who have successfully defended India’s consulate in Herat (Afghanistan).” (Agencies)
