Tura custodial death case
SHILLONG: AN under-fire West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi on Sunday rubbished allegations that he was denying the post-mortem report of the custodial death victim Balsan Marak to the parents.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Bakshi said there was no question of denying the post-mortem report to the parents of the victim.
Stating that a high level inquiry has been ordered into the matter by the State Political department, Bakshi said he was only awaiting clearance from the higher ups of the State Government before issuing the post-mortem report to the victim’s family.
Bakshi also claimed that he had personally asked the District Medical Health Officer, Tura, to hand over the post-mortem and inquest reports to the parents of the victim but since an inquiry was slated to be conducted by the Commissioner of Division, he had to get the necessary clearance from the higher ups.
“If I was conducting the inquiry I would have issued the post-mortem report to the parents,” he added.
However, there were indications that the post-mortem and inquest reports might be handed over to the victim’s family on Monday although the same could not be confirmed.
Meanwhile, sources confirmed that the post-mortem report had failed to ascertain the exact cause of the death following which the doctors have decided to conduct a topological analysis to confirm the cause of death.
Meanwhile, sources informed that Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has written to some Garo Hills based NGOs assuring of stringent action against any policeman found guilty by the probe team.
The Inquiry Officer, Divisional Commissioner PW Ingty has started his inquiry into the matter and he is coordinating with the deputy Commissioner to get to the bottom of the case.
