Competency of MeECL engineers under scanner

SHILLONG: Maitshaphrang Movement (MSM) convener Michael Syiem said that it was surprising to see the Assam Government complete power projects in a far less time compared to the recent projects which were implemented after Meghalaya attained its own Statehood.

“Despite having the latest technology, the recent project like the Myntdu Leshka Hydel Electricity Project (MLHEP) had taken eight years to complete,” Syiem told while addressing media on his analysis which he had done on the power projects in the State on Monday.

He said that this clearly proves on the lack of competency and efficiency on the part of the MeECL engineers who are implementing the project.

Syiem also said that the Myntdu project which was projected on June 30, 2005 with a cost of Rs 490 crore for 2 units escalated to mammoth hike taking it to Rs 1286.53 crore which was unjustifiable.

“The Myntdu Leshka Hydel Electricity Project has cost the State exchequer dearly,” the Maitshaphrang Movement (MSM) convener said.

Syiem revealed that when Meghalaya was under the Assam government, many Hydel projects including Sonapani Mini Hydel Project which is considered to be the third oldest hydro power project was constructed and commissioned in 1922.

While referring to the Umtru hydro electric power plant, he said that the investigation of the project was completed during 1950-1953 and construction commenced on April, 1954.

“The first three units of 2.8 MW each were commissioned during April, 1957. The fourth unit of 2.8 MW was commissioned during 1968,” Syiem said.

On the Umiam hydro electric project which was commissioned in 1960, MSM chairman said that all major works was completed in 1964 and it took 6 weeks for the lake to become full upto 3180 feet above sea level.

He also informed that it was first in 1965 that water from the Umiam dam was released into the tunnel.

“But now in this era where engineers are equipped with the latest technology, it is unacceptable that there is so much delay in projects,” Syiem informed.

He added, “This proves that engineers are not experienced and they have no accountability and professionalism.”

He said that the Government should allow the MeECL to function independently.
