Mining activities on rivers banned in EKH

SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills District Administration has prohibited mining activities or removal of sand from rivers without obtaining clearance and license from the competent authority after NGT order to restrain any person or company to carry out mining activities or removal of sand from river banks anywhere in the country.

However the extraction of sand by local community from water harvesting structures constructed by the Soil and Water Conservation Department across the streams at Cherrapunjee have been excluded from the purview of the order.

The ban will remain in force with immediate effect until further orders.
