TURA: Curfew continues in place in the Chokpot region of South Garo Hills, a day after angry mobs attacked the police station and burnt down three police vehicles including civilian motorcycles in anger over the death of a suspect while in police custody.
“The situation is under control and curfew remains in place since Thursday afternoon. There have been no untoward incidents,” informed Deputy Commissioner in charge of the district, T.G. Momin, while speaking to The Shillong Times on Friday.
There was no relaxation of curfew on Thursday night and all through Friday to prevent any flare up in violence even as additional security forces have arrived from Baghmara and Tura.
“If there are no untoward incidents we may lift curfew on Saturday morning for about five to six hours to allow people to purchase food items. But that will depend on the situation,” said Momin.
Hundreds of people attacked the police station on Thursday and pelted it with stones. They also burnt down two police gypsies and a mini truck besides torching three civilian motorcycles parked outside the police station.
