Opp for police force augmentation

SHILLONG: Opposition leader Dr Donkupar Roy has admitted that it is impossible to eliminate militancy totally if the common people are not taken on board.

“The State Government seriously needs to look into the option of getting the confidence of people for assistance in the fight to eradicate militancy,” Dr Roy said while participating in the general discussion on the Budget here in the Assembly on Monday.

“I was shocked by the admission of the Chief Minister that militant’s firepower is far better compared to the police. I do not agree with this argument with the Chief Minister. I think Government has the resources to get the best of weapons available in the country to enable the police to overpower militants,” Dr Roy said.

He also stressed that the Government should also give top priority on the welfare of the police force.

Meanwhile, HSPDP legislator Ardent M Basaiawmoit said that the root cause of militancy may be attributed to many reasons and factors, however the fact remains that the people at the helm of affair, cannot whatsoever escape the blame.

“The shift of ideology on the part of the militant outfits from protecting their own people to killing and terrorizing the innocent ones including women is a matter of serious concern. The ugly turn of event is further aggravated the situation,” Basaiawmoit said.

Meanwhile, he said that as per media report, there are allegation that many politicians are using the service of these groups for their political gain especially during election time.

“If the allegation is true, we as politician have to hang our heads in shame.”
