SHILLONG: Opposition leader Dr Donkupar Roy has suggested on the need to set up residential schools in Shillong and Tura.

“Many of the students hailing from the rural areas cannot afford to stay in a rented house. The setting up of the residential schools will provide accommodation to the students from the rural areas besides giving free education,” Dr Roy said while participating in the general discussion on the budget in the Assembly on Monday.

The Opposition Leader also said that the Government should provide free education for students hailing from the border areas till the degree level.

He also raised the issue over the delay in the release of the funds under the MGNREGS.

“I have received complaints from many villages over the delay in the release of the funds,” Dr Roy said while adding that this has delayed payment of the wages to the concerned beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, Dr Roy also raised questions about that the absence of an adequate parking lot in the city which has created lots of inconvenience to the general public.

He also suggested that if the Urban Government could consider the option of construction of a parking lot at Barik point by shifting the PWD office to another location.

With the absence of the proper footpath along the route from Umshyrpi towards Upper Shillong which is a huge risk on the pedestrians who are working on this road, he suggested that the Government can consider the possibilities of constructing of the Skywalk like in Mumbai.
