TURA: Condemning the recent brutal killing of a mother in a matrilineal society by the proscribed GNLA, the Mother’s Union on Tuesday took out a massive protest rally participated by students, NGOs and church leaders.

During the rally the Mother’s Union condemned the brutal killing of late Josbina M Sangma, a mother, in front of her family at Chokpot on June 3 by a GNLA execution squad even as nationwide condemnation has poured in against the killing.

Earlier president of Mother’s Union, Indira Sangma, while condemning the incident stated that the meeting was not to find faults but to condemn the barbaric act which cannot be tolerated in a matrilineal society.

“We cannot be mute spectators. Such a barbaric act is inhuman and not befitting of the A·chik society” said former ICFAI Pro Vice Chancellor Milton Sangma. He sympathized and expressed solidarity with the victim’s family and sent a strong message that no objectives can be achieved through killings. While urging militant organizations to come forward for table talks he stated that it would be their greatest contribution in bringing about peace in Garo Hills again.

Appealing to the government to take concrete and effective steps to mitigate the ongoing deterioration in Garo Hills Former MPSC Chairperson V.S.B. Sangma said that as a mother she hangs her head in shame because such acts forces one to think that as mothers we have failed in our duties. She condemned all the random killings, kidnapping, extortion take place and said that these should stop.

A one minute silence for late Josbina was observed before the protest march.

During the protest rally major business establishments in Tura remained closed to show solidarity with the victim’s family and the Mother’s Union.

Protest march held at Ampati

A protest rally was held by the womenfolk of Ampati in South West Garo Hills on Tuesday to condemn the gruesome murder of 35-year-old Josbina Sangma at Chokpot recently and acts of violence and extortion by the militants.

Braving incessant rain, over 200 women, irrespective of community and religion, and carrying placards condemning the murder and calling for peace, marched throughout the streets of Ampati.

Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh, district officials, church leaders and a few men also participated in the march.

A one-minute silence and prayers and condolences were offered to the bereaved family after the procession.
