NONGSTOIN: One Sombaro Sangma (33) of Aradonga, West Khasi Hills District, allegedly assaulted the doctor posted at Aradonga PHC on Wednesday at around 11 am.
Reliable sources informed that Sombaro had come to the PHC in a drunken state and without any provocation assaulted the doctor.
Villagers of Aradonga, however, claim that Sombaro’s action was borne out of frustration since the doctor rarely attended his duties and was present at the PHC for only a day or two in a week. Villagers also allege that the PHC lacked medicines and people had to travel all the way to Boko in Assam to obtain medicines.
The sources informed that this was not the first instance that Sombaro had assaulted a doctor at Aradonga PHC, since he had assaulted two doctors on two different occasions in the past.
It may be mentioned that most doctors posted at Aradonga PHC serve there for not more than two years. Villagers believe that the frequent disturbances created by drunken people at the PHC might be one of the reasons for their early exit from the PHC.
Police personnel from Aradonga Outpost have not taken any action against Sombaro since no complaint has been lodged against him.
