Beas tragedy: More personnel to search
MANDI: The search operation to trace the 17 persons still missing following the tragedy in the Beas river involving a group of engineering students from Hyderabad resumed on its fifth day on Friday with more personnel set to join the efforts. “Fifteen more divers from Hyderabad will join the operation later in the day,” said Telangana home minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy, who has been camping at Mandi following the mishap on Sunday evening. About 60 students and faculty members of the VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology of Hyderabad were on an excursion to Manali when 25 members of the group were swept away in the river following the sudden release of water from the reservoir of the Larji hydropower project near Thalot. The bodies of T Upender of Khammam district and G Arvind Kumar of Hyderabad were recovered on Thursday, taking to eight the number of bodies recovered so far. More than 550 rescue workers from various agencies are searching for the missing persons with the search parties focusing their efforts on the 20-km stretch from Thalot to Pandoh river. (PTI)
5-year-old girl raped in Haryana
Jind: A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth in Sunderpura village here on Thursday. The accused, Bunty, allegedly raped the child while she was alone in her house, police said. When her parents returned after working in their farm in the village they found her lying unconscious and took her to hospital, police said. A case of rape has been registered against the accused and investigations are on, police added. (PTI)
7-year-old girl raped by teenager in Jaunpur
Jaunpur (UP): A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a teenager in village Devkali in Sujanganj area here, police said on Friday. The incident took place Thursday night when the girl was sleeping outside her house and the 17-year-old boy allegedly raped her, Additional SP, Ramji Singh Yadav said. The family members and villagers caught the accused when the girl started shouting, he said adding that the boy was later detained by the police. A case of rape has been registered against the accused, he said adding, police is further investigating the issue. (PTI)
Four dead, 13 injured in Kolkata fire
Kolkata: Four persons persons were killed and 13 others injured when an LPG cylinder exploded at a house in Tiljala in Park Circus area in the metropolis on Friday. “Four people succumbed to their injuries in hospital,” Joint CP (Hqs) Rajeev Mishra told PTI. All the injured were taken to the Chittaranjan National Medical College where doctors said 10 of them sustained 70 per cent burns. The fire was doused by eight fire engines, fire brigade sources added. (PTI)
Five killed in road accident near Agra
Lucknow: Five people were killed and six injured when a vehicle rammed into a stationary truck on the Agra-Gwalior highway on Friday, police said. The accident took place early morning at Mallpura, some 20km from Agra, on the highway to Gwalior. All the deceased belonged to Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh (MP) and were headed to Badrinath in Uttarakhand for a pilgrimage. While five people travelling in the ill-fated Chevorlet Tavera were killed on the spot, five others were admitted to a nearby medical facility, police said. The bodies have been sent for autopsy and information has been sent to the families of the deceased. (IANS)
2 infants die of diarrhoea; 6 take ill in TN
Salem (TN): In a suspected case of gastroenteritis, twon eight-months-old babies died and six other children were hospitalised in the district on Friday. The two babies, who were twin brothers, were suffering from severe diarrhoea and vomiting and died at their home in Konganapuram Panchayat Union area, District Revenue Officer Selvaraj said. Six other children under two years also had same symptoms and were admitted to the government hospital in Edapadi, he said. The DRO said on hearing about the death of the children, he deputed Sankari Revenue Officer and Edapadi Thasildhar to ascertain the situation. Joint Director of Health Dr Aadimolam told PTI that the twin died due to dehydration and the other six children were recovering. The cause of death of the two children was being investigated, he said adding health teams had been posted in the village. (PTI)

New Delhi: Indian Foreign secretary, Sujatha Singh, said on Friday that she, External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj, and National Security Adviser, Ajit Doval, will accompanyPrime Minister, Narendra Modi, on his Bhutan visit. She said, “Bhutan is the first foreign country that the PM is visiting after being sworn in.” Singh said, “In Bhutan, Modi will be meeting his Majesty, the King of Bhutan, his majesty, the 4th Druk Gayalpo, and the Prime Minister of Bhutan.” She said, “Modi would also address a joint session of National Assembly and National Council of Bhutan and meet the Leader of the Opposition.” Singh said that our assistance package to the country amounts to Rs 4,500 crores for Bhutan’s 11th Five Year Plan 2013-2018.
