TURA: The National People’s Party (NPP) has slammed Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for calling Tura MP Purno A Sangma a Bangladeshi.

In its emergency meeting held recently, the NPP (West Garo Hills unit) ‘unanimously resolved to outrightly condemn the CM’s statement on the floor of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly as false, irrational and devoid of facts’.

“The statement was directed to malign the NPP chief’s image. The Chief Minister should desist from making such statements against a senior parliamentarian and a national leader like PA Sangma in future,” general secretary of the NPP, West Garo Hills, MN Marak said in a statement.

Demanding an unconditional apology from the CM the NPP stated that Mukul Sangma had exposed his own lack of knowledge of the historical background of Bangladesh which had come into being only in 1971.

“PA Sangma was born on 1st September, 1947 when there was no Bangladesh but East Bengal of the then undivided India and hence the CM’s Bangladeshi statement did not hold any water,” the NPP said.

The party has also asked the Mukul Sangma to come out with facts and proofs to substantiate his claim within 10 days failing which it warned of seeking legal course of action accordingly.
