Success for hearing impaired students

SHILLONG: Five hearing impaired students from Montfort Centre, Tura who enrolled in National Institute of Open School for class 10 passed without any hiccups.

A statement by Montfort Centre, Tura said that the children hail from various areas of West Garo Hills.

Happywel D Sangma, Titi M. Sangma, Rik Thasrang D. Marak, Chian D. Sangma and Ismart R. Marak with their sheer hard work and support from Montfort special educators managed to impress not only their parents but the growing hearing impaired community in Tura.

When asked about what they wanted to do in life, the answers ranged from pursuing graphic design to sign language instructors to government jobs. According to census 2011, West Garo Hills has the highest number of hearing impaired individuals in Meghalaya.

This feat might go a long way in encouraging hearing impaired students from Garo hills who leave education for a variety of reasons.
