Family suspects ‘foul play’

SHILLONG: The family members of the 12-year-old girl Mary Hunlang Marwein from Mawthadraishan in West Khasi Hills, who died in Mizoram under mysterious circumstances, suspect ‘foul play’ which led to her death.

The girl had reportedly committed suicide on June 7. She was buried in Mizoram the next day.

As per the post-mortem report issued by the medical and health officer, she died due to ‘asphyxia as a result of constriction of the neck due to hanging.’

“We are not ready accept that that she had committed suicide. We suspect something else,” a relative of girl told newsmen here on Tuesday.

According to the relatives of the victim, to make matters worse she was buried in Mizoram depriving the family to carry out the last rites.

However, with the help of the HANM’s Women’s Wing the family was able to retrieve the body.

“She died on June 7 but we were informed only on June 8 after she was buried,” the victim’s family alleged. The employer informed the family that according to customs in Mizoram the body had to be buried before 12 noon.

The victim was working as a domestic help in the house of one Golda Thabah – a teacher in a Mizoram school.

The family members alleged that during their visit to Mizoram for collecting Mary’s body, Golda refused to meet them.

The family had to go through the Superintendent of Police, Aizawl to retrieve the body from the graveyard.

The relatives of the victim are also planning to go to Siliguri to meet the family members of Golda’s in-laws.
