TURA: The Social Action Committee of the Garo Baptist Convention (ABDK) in a meeting held at its office in Tura on Tuesday has expressed deep concern over the recent alleged assault of five teachers of Rongkugre Mission School in Challang, West Khasi Hills.
It may be mentioned that the five teachers were allegedly assaulted by a police team while they were returning home from a neighbour’s house after watching the opening ceremony of the FIFA world Cup.
Pointing out that this was not the first time that the police had targeted innocent people the meeting urged upon the Police Department to be extra cautious in dealing with innocent people and not to cause unnecessary harm to the common man. The meeting also resolved to write to the Home Minister and the Director General of Police (DGP) to express displeasure over the incident as well as to urge the concerned authority to give proper directions to deal with such incidents with caution in future.
Meanwhile, the ABDK has lauded Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma’s statement on the floor of the house where he had announced that all militant outfits are to be given an opportunity to come to a negotiating table and talk with the government for permanent and lasting peace in Garo Hills thereby ushering in a new era of peace, progress and prosperity in the state of Meghalaya.
