Sri Lanka detains seven Indian fishermen

Colombo: Seven more Indian fishermen were arrested Friday for poaching in Sri Lankan waters Friday, the navy said. The latest arrests takes to 53 the total number of Indian fishermen taken into custody in Sri Lanka this week, Xinhua reported. The Sri Lanka Navy arrested 46 Indian fishermen Wednesday and seized 11 boats.  A navy spokesman said six boats were seized off Delft Island in Sri Lanka’s north while the rest were seized in the sea off Thalaimannar, also in the same region.  “The navy has handed them over to the fisheries department,” a spokesman said.  The navy had arrested 82 Indian fishermen June 7 after they allegedly entered the island nation’s waters. They were ordered to be released by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in a goodwill gesture ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. The continuing arrests of Indian fishermen has caused unrest in Tamil Nadu, which is separated from Sri Lanka by a narrow strip of sea. (IANS)

JD(U) rebels vow to continue with their protest

Patna: Though they failed in their efforts to defeat the official JD(U) candidates in Rajya Sabha bypoll, dissident JD(U) MLAs today decided to continue with their protests and would continue to expose the wrongdoings of government in assembly. A day after election to the two RS seats, 19 JD(U) rebels met at the residence of Gyanendra Singh Gyanu on Friday to chalk out future course of action. Gyanu, MLA from Barh in Patna district, who is leading the dissidents, told PTI that “we are not demoralised by failing to ensure victory of our candidates in the voting yesterday (Thursday).” The two unsuccessful Independent candidates fielded by rebels – real estate baron Anil Sharma and Sabir Ali also attended the meeting to express solidarity. Gyanu said the meeting decided to continue with their protest against “highhandedness” of former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. “We will go to the people’s court and expose wrongdoings of the party and government on emerging issues during assembly session,” Gyanu said. HC seeks CBI’s response on Chautala’s plea for bail extension

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court today sought CBI’s response on the plea of former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, serving a 10-year jail term in teachers recruitment case, for extending by four weeks his interim bail for completing his brother’s post-cremation rituals as he was currently hospitalised. The high court had on June 3 granted three weeks’ interim bail to 79-year-old Chautala for carrying out the post-cremation rituals of his brother, who died on June 1. A bench of justice Siddharth Mridul today asked CBI to file a status report before the next date of hearing on June 23 even as the agency opposed the plea and said Chautala’s health condition should be checked in AIIMS. “Issue notice. Counsel for CBI seeks time to file a status report. Let status report be filed before the next date of hearing,” the court said. The order was passed after hearing arguments by advocates R K Anand and Amit Sahni on behalf of Chautala and CBI respectively. Anand told the court that Chautala will perform the rituals or ceremonies if he is well enough. This submission came in response to the court’s query, “Is he well enough to perform the ceremonies?” Chautala has sought extension of his bail by four weeks on the ground that he is currently admitted in the ICU of Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon due to bad health and if allowed by the doctors, he would like to attend the remaining post-cremation rites of his brother Pratap Singh.
