Cop alleges ‘mental torture’
SHILLONG: In a new twist, CID officer Anjan Chakraborty, who was alleged to have absconded from Shillong, said on Saturday that he is currently in Kolkata, and alleged that IG (CID) BR Rana had mentally tortured him in the past which compelled him to seek voluntary retirement.
When contacted to get his response on the allegations, Rana did not return the call.
There were reports that Chakraborty had gone missing after two FIRs were filed against him, one related to availing a loan and another on the purchase of a camera.
However, Chakraborty in a statement issued here on Saturday said that he was not absconding and is currently camping at Kolakta.
“I am not absconding as I am still camping in Kolkata and I also receive many letters in my Kolkata address,” he said.
Giving reasons for leaving Shillong, Chakraborty said, “On November 1, 2013 I submitted a petition to IGP (CID) BR Rana stating that due to his inhuman torture, I am not in a position to continue my service. After 35 years of active service in Meghalaya police where I got promoted from the rank of a constable to that of an inspector I opted for voluntary retirement and left Shillong.”
According to Chakraborty, the allegations against him surfaced only after he filed a petition in the High Court of Meghalaya on June 18 this year regarding his voluntary retirement.
Chakraborty said that he had earlier sent a pleader’s notice to the Government to consider his voluntary retirement, but the department had informed him that he had not handed over the records related to the pending cases to the CID department which according to the official is not true since he had handed over the case records to the then SSP M Syiem on February 18 this year.
Regarding the two FIRs filed against him, Chakraborty said that it was after Karuna Sindhu Ghosh came to Kolkata and requested him to avail a loan that the official tried to take him to a company and thereafter he did not have any knowledge about the matter.
Chakraborty also filed a counter FIR against Ranadhir Dhar alleging that he was ready to pay for the camera he purchased from him on installment basis, but, instead Dhar filed a case against him.
