SHILLONG: The Cardiology Department in NEIGRIHMS achieved another milestone after they successfully treated a fifty-year old man, from Nagaland, who was suffering from Aortic Aneurysm with dissection, which is a serious condition in which the major blood vessel, aorta suffers spontaneous rupture.
A team of doctors from the departments of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Anaesthesiology was specifically organised to take up the challenge to seal the ruptured artery through a hybrid procedure. The team was headed by AG Ahangar, Director, NEIGRIHMS and included Prof. Animesh Mishra, Dr. Manish Kapoor, Dr. Amit Malviya, Dr. Manoj Saikia, Dr. JP Kalita, Dr. Pravin Jha , Dr. Reuben, Dr. Rakesh Nongtombom,  and staff members including Tara Rabha, Mansi Panmei, Atila Pongen, Lalenkawli, Mamoni Nandi, Podma Dornal, KR Sarma, Achyut Sarma and Bakinshanlang S Hynniewta.
“If untreated this condition can lead to kidney failure, loss of limbs and even death. Normally a major surgery is the only option, which is a high risk surgery that consumes more than ten units of blood and involves a prolonged prognosis” Head of Cardiology, Dr Animesh Mishra said in a statement issued here on Friday.
According to Dr Mishra, a major Aortic Stent with distal extensions into each major branch of the aorta was implanted in the patient within an hour without any complications.
While the patient is recovering, the entire team is jubilant over the possibility of such procedures in the future at NEIGRIHMS – the “dream destination” for such medical care in Northeast region.
“The aortic stent grafting is a relatively safe procedure and can be done under local anaesthesia. The cost of the procedure varies from 3.5 to 7.5 lakhs depending on the location and size of the defect. Post-procedure patient can be mobilized from the very next day and the long term outcomes are very good,” he said while adding that this is the first of its kind in entire North East.
