TURA: A group of deserters from a Garo militant outfit have abducted a teenage boy and have demanded ransom from the father in the Bajengdoba town of North Garo Hills on Monday night.

The group of armed men brandishing an AK rifle and small arms entered Bajengdoba Narangkol village, on Monday night to kidnap a dairy farmer Dil Bahadur Sangma.

When the armed men knocked on the door of the house and sought Dil Bahadur he managed to convince them them that they had entered a wrong house and pointed out another dwelling a little distance away. As the gang moved to the next house he quickly gathered his wits and fled. The armed gang chased him and even fired at him unsuccessfully. In retaliation they took away Sangma’s fifteen-year-old son, Boke D Marak.

North Garo Hills police have identified the gang as a bunch of deserters from the ANVC-B outfit. The group deserted the outfit with an AK rifle and four pistols and have been indulging in abductions of petty traders for ransom from the Bajengdoba region.

The members of the group have been identified as Dikka, Bryno, Sengseng Shakespeare, Nathan, Abot, Sengsak, Krunen and Sang.

Following the identification of the group, police teams raided the Rongrong Songgitcham village of Bajengdoba on Tuesday but the criminals managed to escape.

“We came close to getting them but our presence was given away by barking of dogs in the village when we were preparing to raid the area,” informed police.
