SHILLONG: The indefinite hunger strike being staged by the members of the Association of Qualified Grade-IV-2011, East Khasi Hills District at Nongthymmai football ground entered the second day on Tuesday even as five agitators were shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital following deterioration of their health.

When contacted, association general secretary P Lyngdoh Thabah said that the agitators were released from the hospital after preliminary treatment. “They have all come back to take part in the hunger strike,” Thabah said.

She also said that the health of many of the agitators have worsened even though they are refusing to get admitted to the hospital.

“We will continue our hunger strike till the Government gives an assurance that the merit list would be extended,” the association general secretary asserted.

UDP’s Nongthymmai legislator Jemino Mawtoh on Tuesday came to meet the agitators.

In January last, the Government had extended the merit for another six months.

Out of the total 331 qualified candidates in the merit list, 289 have been appointed while 42 candidates are still awaiting their turn. Interestingly, all the 42 candidates are women.
