SHILLONG: A protest letter against the probable appointment of Justice Uma Nath Singh, a senior judge of Allahabad High Court as the Chief Justice or Judge of the hill states of Meghalaya and Uttarkhand is being circulated among the lawyers of Shillong.

The protest letter written by the lawyers of Nainital, (Uttarakhand) High Court Bar Association was addressed to the Chief Justice of India citing alleged bad behavioural attitudes towards the lawyers and the public on the part of Justice Uma Nath Singh.

There will be a vacancy in High Court of Meghalaya shortly as the incumbent Chief Justice KC Pant recently got the elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court. According to informed sources, the lawyers in Shillong are adopting a wait-and-watch policy as far as the probable appointment of Justice Uma Nath Singh as the Acting Chief Justice of High Court of Meghalaya is concerned.

There is a section of lawyers in Shillong who feel that instead of bringing in Uma Nath Singh, the senior most Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya TN Singh should be appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of High Court of Meghalaya.

However, the lawyers in Shillong are yet to register their protest against the likely appointment of Justice Uma Nath Singh as the Acting Chief Justice of High Court of Meghalaya.
