SHILLONG: The KSU has lauded the efforts of the present Executive Committee (EC) in the KHADC to take action against those non-tribal businessmen who have been operating their business without obtaining valid trading licenses from the Council.

“The present EC is doing a commendable job. This is the first time that any EC in the KHADC has conducted such a massive drive to check illegal business activities of non-tribal traders,” KSU president Daniel Khyriem told newsmen after meeting KHADC CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit here on Wednesday.

While condemning the recent attack on the KHADC staff by a group led by businessman Paul Leong and his son Kimfa Marbaniang, the KSU chief warned that the Union would take suitable action against anyone trying to prevent the enforcement staff of the KHADC from performing their duties in the future.

He also informed that the Union has offered its cooperation to the KHADC in any future exercise to check trading licenses and eviction of roadside hawkers.

Khyriem, however, asserted that genuine non-tribal traders need not panic at the effort launched by the District Council. “We urge the genuine non-tribal traders to comply with the various directives of the KHADC,” he said.

KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa urged the police to arrest all those involved in the attack on the KHADC staff and media persons.

KHADC CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said the KSU leaders were impressed with the efforts of the EC to regulate the activities of non-tribal traders.

He also informed that the KSU had offered its assistance in any future eviction drive and checking of trading license. “I have explained the KSU leaders that it would not be proper for the Council to involve them in any such checking,” the CEM said.

He, however, indicated that the KHADC would be involving magistrates and the police while conducting eviction drives in the future.
