NONGPOH: Aggrieved over the apathetic attitude of MeECL in releasing the land compensation to the land owners whose land were acquired for construction of the New Umtru Hydro Electric Project in Byrnihat, the aggrieved land owners along with the KSU, North Khasi Hills District, stopped the construction work in protest against the delay in payment of compensation.

As many as 40 land owners have been awaiting payment of the compensation amount since 2005.

When contacted, MeECL SDO C.W. Pariat said the department had already released the compensation amount to the Revenue department of the district administration for payment to the affected land owners and added that the reason behind the delay in releasing the compensation money to the land owners would be known to the Revenue department only.
