42,460 Bangladeshis missing in Assam: Govt

Guwahati: Around 42,460 illegal migrants from Bangladesh are missing in Assam after they could not be deported even after being detected by tribunals or courts.
Between 1986 and May, 2014, altogether 59,512 illegal migrants have been detected by various tribunals and courts in the state. Of them, 2,446 have been deported, Forest Minister Rakibul Hussain said while replying to question in the Assembly on wednesday.
Around 13,900 detected illegal migrants have registered themselves at the Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRRO), while 636 have filed writ petitions in the high court. Altogether 70 illegal migrants are presently housed in the three detention camps in the state. ‘The rest remaining are missing,’ Hussain said.
On the Indo-Bangladesh border fencing, the minister informed that 218.170 km of the barbed fencing work has been completed while work is in progress in a stretch of 6.52 km. (UNI)
