SHILLONG: The newly floated Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has pledged to remain firm in its demand for the implementation of the Inner Liner Permit (ILP) as per the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation Act, 1873.

This was announced during the oath taking ceremony of 10 leaders of the HYC central executive committee (CEC).

The HYC, which led to a split of over three-decade-old Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has a strength of over 200 members. Majority of the youths in the organization are former KSU leaders and members from various parts of Khasi and Jaintia Hills.

Among the leaders who took oath on Friday were Peter J Lawai (president), Donboklang Kharlyngdoh (vice president) and Robert June Kharjahrin (general secretary).

The oath was administered by former Khasi Author Society (KAS) president, SS Majaw.

While delivering his maiden address after the oath taking ceremony, Kharjahrin said that the Council is firm on its stand over the demand in the implementation of the ILP.

“We would like to make it clear that there is no better mechanism other than the ILP to check the problem of influx of illegal immigrants,” he said adding that the Council would not backtrack from its stand at any cost.

He said that the Council will also demand the implementation of the residential permit for the non-indigenous populace besides implementing the work and labour permits.

While demanding for the fixation of the number of trading licence to be issued to non-tribal traders from the KHADC, the HYC general secretary said the Council would also call for scrapping of all subsidies to industries run by people from outside the state.

Highlighting on the other concerns of the Council, Kharjahrin said, “We are also committed to taking up the issue pertaining to the long pending international and inter-state boundaries disputes.” The Council would also seek amendment to the KHADC Khasi Custom and Lineage Act, 2006.
